Khachaturian / Chymisch

As a member of the class at the Paris Conservatoire I am automatically a member of the saxophone ensemble, we had a concert on the 14th of December and I had the opportunity to perform Aram Khachaturian's Violin concerto (transposed for soprano saxophone) in this concert.

Here is a video from the concert:

We also had a class concert this month, where I performed another piece by Hector Parra, this time Chymisch for baritone saxophone & electronics.

Here is a video from the concert:

I hope you all have a happy and safe holiday, and I'll see you back here with more news next year!

Hector Parra, Ciel Rouillé

I recently had the opportunity to work on a fantastic piece for baritone saxophone, flute, piano and percussion by Hector Parra called 'Ciel Rouillé' with soundinitiative.

We were invited to perform at the Festival d'Automne d'Annecy, and this piece was part of the program we took to 'the mountains' - the rest of the program included music by Bianchi, Furrer, Ligeti and the premiere of a piece by Jean-Pascal Chaigne.

I will hopefully have a video from the festival of our performance, but for the moment here is a photo of us working on 'Ciel Rouillé' with the composer.

Ircam Forum

Recently a friend and colleague of mine Benjamin Carey was selected to present his work at the annual Ircam Forum here in Paris that was held at the Gaîté Lyrique.
I performed his piece _derivations for improvising musician and interactive electronic system - the electronics reacts to the performer, reading through it's library of sound files, treating them in real time, improvising in real time - it was a fantastic experience working on the piece with Ben in the Ircam studios and performing the piece at the Gaîté Lyrique with a 6 channel surround setup!

Here is a link to a video of the performance:

Music for three (3)

Together with two colleagues I have started a trio - piano, percussion and saxophone - Noam Bierstone from Toronto and Antoine Alerini from Corsica will play percussion and piano respectively. Our first concert is in the Salon Vinteuil on the 19th of November - we'll be playing Durch by Mark André.

An Australian in Paris...

This September I began studying at the Paris Conservatoire (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris to be precise...) with Monsieur Claude Delangle,  in the class that was opened by the inventor of the instrument - Adolphe Sax himself. It is a fantastic honour, and opportunity to be a part of this prestigious institution. I will be here for two years while I complete my Masters (Deuxième Cycle Supérieur).

Darmstadt

I will be attending the 46th Internationale Fereinkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt, Germany from this afternoon (14th of July). Looking forward to hearing, working on and performing the work of some new and exciting (and other less new but still exciting) composers.
